Restoration is a chain of dependencies: data, applications, identity, connectivity, devices and people. Testing one file is useful, but the business needs to know whether a critical service can be brought back within a workable time.

Start with the business process

Pick an operation that matters, such as processing orders or admitting guests. Identify the systems it needs and agree how long that process can be unavailable and how much recent data can be lost.

Restore to a safe test environment

Choose a sample of files, an application or a complete workload as appropriate. Record whether the restore succeeds, how long it takes and which people or credentials it depends on.

Test the connected pieces

Can users sign in? Can the application reach its database? Are network routes and certificates available? Does the restored data make sense to the team who uses it?

Turn the result into a plan

Write down gaps, owners and a date to retest. Keep recovery instructions somewhere accessible during an outage, and review them when major systems change.

A short, repeatable exercise provides far more confidence than a dashboard alone. It also exposes the decisions the business must make before an incident.
